As far as I am aware the First and Second Welland Canals did not have any tunnels underneath them, however with the advancement of technology and transportion of goods, tunnels were constructed underneath the Third and Fourth Welland Canals to keep things moving both on water and on land. Here are some pictures of these tunnels.

Third Welland Canal Tunnels

St. Davids Tunnel:

This tunnel was built to allow traffic to pass underneath the 3rd Welland Canal and the Grand Trunk Railway (now called Canadian National Railway). It has since been sealed up. One entrance is located in the Royal Niagara Golf Course just south of Lock 16 and to be honest, not sure where the other side is located. Please contact me if you know where the other end is.

Here is an historical picture of the West end of the tunnel when it was in use. Sadly this is the end I cannot locate at this time.

Here are some pictures of the East end that is still visible today:

Grand Trunk Railway Tunnel:

The Grand Trunk Railway Tunnel runs underneath Locks 18 and 19 of the 3rd Welland Canal. Built in 1876, it truly once was a sight to bestow. However currently the one end of the tunnel has been bricked up due to vandals in the area. This beautiful piece of work is now covered in graffitti and is in a sad state. Please people I cannot state this enough. We need to PRESERVE our history, not cover it in scribbles!

Here are some historical pictures of the tunnel:

Here are some pictures of it today:
